Zach and Ali’s garden is in the building stages with multiple components still in flux. They have a vegetable garden, the beginnings of fruit orchard, and are attempting to grow hops. Their property is home to a large chicken coop with a variety of chicken breeds, a top bar beehive, and a modest setup for pressing cider from their apples.

Appropriate swap items include plants, seeds, produce, eggs, local honey, locally grown/process foods like pickles and jelly, compost base and red worms. If you are pull up and dividing bulbs bring the extras. We still have time to transplant your excess plant starts for a fall garden. Exact swaps are not necessary. See something you like; ask and it is likely yours. Pack out your unswapped items left at the end of the day.

Post what you are bringing or e-mail mpgardenswap@gmail.com. I will post all comments by Friday evening.

This is the last 2014 MP Garden Swap. I’ll be reaching out to the Maxwell Park neighborhood for 2015 volunteers next spring. Please consider hosting an MP Garden Swap. It is super low prep and a truly great way to meet your gardening neighbors.

MP Garden Swap 2014

The monthly MP Garden Swap, held at Maxwell Park since 2010, is moving. I am so excited. The Swap will now meet at a different Maxwell Park neighborhood garden every month. We will share plants, seeds and produce as usual AND see what’s working in local gardens. I extend a welcome to all – gardeners wanting to swap, want-to-be gardeners looking for ideas, and those who want to meet their gardening neighbors.

The 2014 MP Garden Swap is held the 3rd Saturday of the month July through October from 10-10:30AM. We meet for ½ hour only. This assures a quick viewing of all items for swap, not waiting around for an hour or more to see if something else arrives you’d prefer swapping for. Please do not show up expecting to tour the host’s garden later in the day.

Find a quick introduction to the 2014 MP Garden Swap hosts below. Address and garden description to follow under separate posts.
July 19 – Susan Scolnick
August 16 – Jane Friedman
September 20 – Debi Stolar
October 18 – Zach Powers & Ali Swann

MP Garden Swap is highly informal, with very little exact swapping going on. Items are placed on display during the first 15 minutes. Swapping occurs during the last 15 minutes. See something you like? Ask and it is likely yours. Each host will let you know where to set up swap items. Be kind to your host – make sure clean-up is minimal. Pack in your swap items and pack out any of your items left at the end of the day. Remember to bring an extra bag, box or basket should you take home more than you bring.

MP Garden Swap – Saturday. July 27

TIME: 4:00-4:30
PLACE: Maxwell Park picnic tables. (The park is between Allendale Ave & Fleming Ave. The nearest intersection is Allendale Ave & Lilac Street. Oakland, CA)
DATE: The 2013 MP Garden Swap is the 4th Saturday of the month, March through October.

July reflection – the lack of a garden this year has revealed the mediocrity of store-bought green beans. I cringe when food scrap go in the trash and not the compost. The apartment complex has recycling, but no compost, and storing for a trip back to Maxwell Park is not appealing. The only Walnut Street produce we’ve enjoyed is the first-year harvest of blackberries. Quantity is smaller than a handful at a time, so none to share. Perhaps next year though as the number of canes has increased and they now have a trellis.

My Emeryville neighbors do not have lemons to share. I’m hoping somebody brings a few to the swap. I will share pesto next month if you bring enough sweet basil or Thai basil. Join me at the MP Garden Swap Saturday. Please take a moment to enjoy the 2013 Maxwell Park mosaic project.

MP Garden Swap is highly informal, with very little exact swapping going on. Items are placed on display. See something you like? Ask and it is likely yours.

Set-up and cleaning is a breeze. Pack in your swap items; pack out any of your items left at the end of the day. Remember to bring an extra bag, box or basket should you take home more than you bring. Bring disposable containers and service-ware for dishes you’d like to share.

The MP Swap is perfect for meeting your Oakland gardening neighbors, finding out what grows well in Maxwell Park and enjoying our neighborhood park. See you there!

September 28
